“Angels aren’t supposed to fall in love, especially with each other. But for the record, you were worth it.”
Grace Tate is a Protection Angel and Vampire Hunter, and she has always followed the rules. But some rules are made to be broken…
Until now the fight against evil has been simple, and falling in love was never part of the plan. So what happens when it’s beyond Grace’s control, and when she least expects it she falls for the wrong person?
All hell breaks loose, that’s what.
At Hopetown Valley High, not everything is as it seems, and the one person Grace thought was her enemy becomes her most important ally.
Blood will be shed, lives will be lost and friendships will be tested. It all comes down to one decision, and when Grace tries to save all those dear to her, she realises not everyone can be—or wants to be—saved.
I was a fan of vampire stories, but after the Twilight hit, there seems to be a lot of novels created echoing the same plot. Thus, I did not read much vampire stories after that. Instead, I found out another paranormal creature to love – angels. Now, for this book the author mixed two of my favorite paranormal beings in her story. I admit that at first, I was afraid that it would be like those other vampire stories which are filled with blood and violence, but boy, was I wrong.
More often than not, we see helpless (and dumb?) damsel to be saved by a dashing vampire (ring a bell?). Though the fairytale-like story may be okay to some, the appeal is lost to many. As a feminist, I liked the way the author created the heroine, Grace, as someone who is tough. She has her own principles and beliefs and doesn’t cower from higher authority when she is determined. As for the male characters of the story, we have two. Guess why? The first one is Josh, an interesting character with a strong personality. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind no matter what the cost will be. The other is Seth, a loyal man who will do everything to follow his beliefs. I think he is also the epitome of perseverance because once he has it in his head, he will do everything just to get it. He also has this dark personality, but is supported with sound reasons.
The characters are well described, though I found it hard to connect with them, especially Grace. She seems to be someone you know, but couldn’t understand. Sure, she has boy issues, but her problem doesn’t have to revolve around that. This is the same thing with Josh. He seems to be a good guy at first, but I slowly dislike him as the story progressed. I think it is because I have a thing for bad guys. J
Both Grace and Josh found themselves in a love triangle with Seth. Honestly, I didn’t feel that the relationship between the three was strongly built. There wasn’t much foundation for their feelings, which perhaps resulted to my lack of connection to them.
Another thing is the POVs in this book. I said POVs because the perspective keeps on changing. I actually don’t mind reading others’ POVs, but I find it hard to catch-up with this one. Every time there will be a shift in perspective the story will go back a bit and go over the same events that happened in the previous chapter. Then I’d get frustrated because the POV shifting made the story’s progress slow.
Even though I have some negative feedbacks for this book, I still like it. The author wrote in an effortless manner which made me feel like watching the story instead of reading it. She also let the events unfold by themselves, which can be a bit exciting and frustrating at the same time. KA Last also has her thing with words – she made me laugh and cry for some points in the story. There are also some sweet moments between the characters and beautiful words exchanged that would make the book lovable by others.
Now, will I recommend it? Yes. Will I read the second installment in the series? Definitely.
