Last week, I reached my 24th year of existence. Hooray! Who would have thought that I am no longer 16? Even a few minutes earlier, a nurse in my post-graduate school mistakenly took me for an undergrad freshman. Do I really look that young?
I didn’t really feel like throwing a huge party unlike before, but my day still went on being special. When the clock struck midnight, the room went dark and I was greeted with a big chocolate birthday cake with lighted candles. Birthday songs in two languages and tight hugs followed. Later, my mom prepared a dinner feast for me and had invited several close family friends to join us. Presents were given. Overall, it was a happy occasion filled with joy and laughter from people special to me.
Aside from appreciating the gifts I received, I tend to be contemplating a lot this year. Is this a sign of maturity? At any rate, it became important to me to reflect on my previous words and actions and the years gone by. Did I learn from my experience? What were the lessons I got from my mistakes? How can I improve and move forward? For this 2014 birthday post, let me share these thoughts to you.
Appreciate the present.
I am a chronic planner and organizer. I want everything done according to my plans and schedules. Furthermore, I hate delays, surprises, and failures. Therefore, I tend to focus on what’s next – tomorrow, next week, the future. But lately, I realized the value of the present, that what we have now is more important than the things that are yet to happen. I appreciate the time I am able to spend with my family, friends, and boyfriend. I am very grateful to recognize the gift of now.
Choose your real friends wisely.
More often than not, others describe me as someone who is very sociable, friendly, and approachable. To some extent, they are correct. I don’t deny I have good people skills, but it doesn’t follow that I have a lot of friends. Honestly, I prefer to have a small knit of loyal and understanding people than a large group of acquaintances. I choose carefully and wisely – I want to establish long lasting relationship with people who share the same core values with me. I better be friends with someone who is honest and sincere than another who is rich and popular. As the saying goes, it is better to associate yourself with people of good quality than to be alone in bad company.
Learn when to walk away.
I know it seems easier said than done, but once I learned when to walk away, I realized that it is quite favorable for me. May they be those evil fake friends or heated arguments, I tried to remember when to stop, ignore and walk away. It is definitely better to save myself from nonsense and negative people than to continue suffering from them. I prefer saving relationships than insisting that I am always right in any fights or disagreements I have with my family, friends, and boyfriend.
Never apologize for what you are and what you’ve accomplished.
As popularized by Lady Gaga, I am born this way. I can’t help it if this is my current status in life. Neither I am embarrassed with everything I have successfully accomplished so far. Jealousy reveals the worst out of humankind, but I learned not to feel sorry for something I did fairly. Instead, I continue to do my thing. Still, others may feel intimidated by me and what I’ve become, but what can I do about their insecurities?
Don’t be afraid to take risks.
Henry Ford once said that if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. Don’t be afraid to take risks. I am still in the process of challenging myself in various issues and I find it liberating and exciting to push my limits. Who knows what I might find at the end of the road, right?
About this Outfit
For this birthday post, Impressions of a Princess would like to feature one of my favorite sponsors, OASAP. To portray a young woman who challenges herself to accomplish higher goals, I have worn this OASAP high-low black tiger tunic.
Complementing the fierceness of the animal print, I wore this sexy black high heels from Zalora, also seen here. And before I forget, readers of Impressions of a Princess will exclusively have 15% DISCOUNT on every purchase at zalora.com.ph. Simply key in the code ZBAP1n9 when you check out.
To be honest, I just threw this accessory to somehow complete the ensemble. This gold teardrop rhinestone necklace is also from OASAP.
