I always fancy myself being the heroine in my favourite historical romance novels. There is always something beautiful, romantic, and endearing every time I read stories during that era. Wearing an appealing dinner gown with a tight yet beautiful bodice matched with brilliant jewelry to complement my hair and skin, I would flutter my eyelashes and smile coyly as I converse prettily with the gentleman seated beside me. Oh, how I wish I could do this and more!
Alas, I can’t travel to centuries back just so I could live in that time period. I know it is impossible, but it seems someone up there have heard my wishes and presented me with something better.
On October 18 and 19, the most romantic opera of all time will be shown at the Samsung Hall, SM Aura Premier, Philippines. La Bohème is an opera of four acts composed by Giacomo Puccini based on Henri Murger’s Scènes de la vie de bohème. It is considered as one of the three or four best operas in Italian repertory and one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide.
“Yes, they call me Mimi..”
“What cold hands…let me warm them with my breath..”
A simple craftswoman, Mimi, and poet, Rodolfo, began to fell in love with a kiss in candelight, on a cold Christmas Eve in 1896 Paris.
Directed by international awardee Anton Juan of Madame Butterfly, Best of Opera, The Maids and designed by Otto Fernandez, the duo set the stage for Puccini’s beloved story of bohemian life. Multi-awarded conductor Jonathan Velasco will direct the Manila Symphony Orchestra in this special orchestration of La Bohème.
Filipina soprano and Rosa Ponselle awardee Margarita Gomez Giannelli will play as Mimi while celebrated American tenor Scott Ramsay of Chicago Lyric will be Rodolfo. Marcello will be personified by Italian-Brazilian baritone Fernando Araujo of Opern Institut Salzburg while sopran Myramae Meneses as Musetta. Gred de Leon as Schaunard, Nonon Baang as Colline, and Michael Bulaong as Benoit. Together, the main cast will be accompanied by emergent singers from Viva Voce.
I am so excited to watch this beautiful love story unfolds in the famous streets of Paris. Ressentir de l’amour et de chagrin!
