Merry Christmas!

In the next few minutes, we will be celebrating the most awaited season of 2013. As we come near to this big event, I hope that we will be able to reflect the true meaning of Christmas and share its true spirit to our family, friends, and loved ones.

In Philippines, Christmas is being observed as the longest season of the year. Starting by September, one can hear Yuletide songs being played in department stores and see people doing their Christmas shopping. As my foreign friends observed, Christmas in the Philippines is “quite long and crazy.”

Yes, people get crazy as Christmas approaches. Houses and streets are decorated with beautiful lights and stores offer sales and discounts almost every weekend. Price of almost everything is slashed off to entice people to buy more. Wish lists are being created, given, and exchanged while gift suggestions can be easily found in mall flyers and social media.

A lot of people can be easily blinded with the merriment these commercial establishments pose, but we should not forget what Christmas truly means. As a country with a Catholic majority, the true spirit of this season has been ingrained to us since we started attending our Sunday service.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Love – the unconditional, giving, sharing, and forgiving kind. This Christmas, let us open our hearts to our family, friends, and loved ones and give them the time and attention that they deserve. This Christmas, let us be happy counting our blessings and sharing these to those in need. This Christmas, let us heal ourselves by forgiving those who have wronged us and giving them another chance. This Christmas, let us spread the love God has so openly and unconditionally gave us.
