Nothing better

July 9, 2010

It was my second week of being a Professional Student Teacher (PST English tutor to Koreans) and I bid goodbye to my fellow tutor as the time for her night tutorial arrived. I started taking down the flight of stairs that would take me to the ground floor when I abruptly stopped after hearing a male voice calling my name. “Oh, it’s him again”, I whispered to myself. As he stepped out of the shadow of a darkened hallway, I could see that he is tall, with broad shoulders though slouchy. He approached me and as before, bestowed that crazy smile to me.

I asked where he was going as it was a bit late at that time. He answered that he’d like to take a walk around the condo-hotel and I just gave him one of my no-bother shrug with “Okay”. We both walked out of the building and were absorbed by our 20 questions that we didn’t notice that we had gone far as Robinson’s Place Manila. Since we were almost at the entrance, we just entered the mall and window shopped.

He’s so funny. We are of the same age, but he was more childish than me in a cute way. Suddenly, he asked if I know some 노래방 (karaoke house, literally music room) within the vicinity. I replied with some options, but was not sure if they are offering Korean songs. A bit defeated, he led me to G-box, an amusement section at Robinson’s before. Then I didn’t expect what happened next.

He sat in a bench near the ticket booth and patted the space beside his, ushering me to sit. I obeyed, feeling foolish standing there. He then removed his iPhone from his pocket, plugged his earphones, then began to sing. Sing! I didn’t know what to make out of that crazy yet sweet moment. He sang a Korean song, of course. It was a  slow, romantic song, and for a few seconds he held my hand because I think the lyrics was of holding hands (not sure though, my Korean is still rusty!). When it ended (the song, of course), he asked me what did I think about it. I was like “Er, actually I didn’t understand since you sang it in an alien language”, but  of course I didn’t voice that. “It sounded sweet, but  sad,” I told him. He just smiled his goofy smile, then told me we have to go back.

Walking back to the hotel seemed strange, like something changed. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at that time, but as I now reminisce those memories I can confidently say that like the song that he sang to me that day, there would be “Nothing Better” than him.

Nothing Better – Brown Eyed Soul

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws7lu9H-7xY&feature=related

nothing better nothing better than you
nothing better nothing better than you

이제 꿈처럼 내맘은
그대 품에 가만히 안겨있죠
한순간도 깨지 않는 끝없는 꿈을 꾸죠

이제 숨처럼 내곁에
항상 쉬며 그렇게 있어주면
nothing better nothing better than you
nothing better nothing better than you

nothing better nothing better than you

Translation:

It always appeared before me
Your face, I remember
My heart that stopped short
You spitefully took my dysfunctional heart
And with your bright smile
That’s how you easily opened my heart

It’s true, that is how I became your man
All my unpleasant memories, I no longer recall
Because the hand that holds me tight
is as warm as spring

And now like a dream my heart
has gradually stopped by your side
Without awakening for a single moment,
I dream an endless dream

And now like breathing,
if you were to always rest by my side
if you were to always remain this way
nothing better nothing better than you
nothing better nothing better than you

And now like a dream, my heart
in your embrace, is held still
Without awakening for a single moment,
I dream an endless dream

And now like breathing,
if you were to always rest by my side
if you were to always remain this way
nothing better nothing better than you
nothing better nothing better than you

nothing better nothing better than you

  1. ㅎㅎㅎ this is a cute story!! I wanted to read more when I was done! I hope you write more about this guy because I definitely want to hear another person’s experience regarding a similar matter to mine 😀

                  1. haha well i left korea too soon i think for anything major to happen. ill finish up the part 3 of that story soon but i think i’ll just go with the flow and see what happens. i don’t want to generalize all korean guys a certain way :p

                    1. Oh, yes I understand. Do you think if you could’ve stayed longer, something inevitably will happen? Like J will propose? Yihee! 🙂 I agree with you. I don’t want to generalize them either. One of them might be my prince ^^

                    2. propose?! omg lol no definitely not- too young for that and i’m pretty sure he still has his military duties. And yes! we must always keep our options open because we don’t know which one will be our hubz 😀

  2. Sweet post!!.. The song is nice. The translation is nicer!. I laughed out loud reading some of the things you wrote particularly the “When it ended (the song ofcourse)” part… Hahaha… You are so cute…

    1. Thanks, Naz. Whenever I read back this post, I have mixed feelings. Yes, it is sweet, but when I remember what will happen two years after, I am always filled with grief. How can something so nice end up something terrible?

Share your thoughts, I would love to read them!
