Part of Your World: Mermaid Swim at Manila Ocean Park

It must have been every girl’s dream to be an alluring mythical half-human, half-fish, sea-dwelling creature like Walt Disney’s Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Being fascinated by the beautiful, red-haired, maiden with angelic voice, I once imagined myself atop a rock, surrounded by the endless blue sea, talking to Flounder and Sebastian. Or singing “Part of Your World.”

Life is indeed full of surprises. In my 23 years of existence, I only recently got a chance to live up my childhood fantasy. Of course, my imagination then was nothing to what I have now. As an adult, I envision myself as an enchanting siren – a captivating beauty who, with innate supernatural powers, can hypnotize and rule both men and women in the land. Leading the merpeople, I can establish and widen the empire as the heir of King Triton’s underwater kingdom.

Well, I live in a free country where imagination is allowed.

A little over a week ago, I received an opportunity to try the Mermaid Swim Experience at Manila Ocean Park. For only Php 400, a 45-minute program which includes basic swimming lesson, proper breathing and mermaid gliding techniques, was included. Who was I to decline such a tempting offer?

On that fair day, bloggers were gathered to have a briefing and discuss the do’s and don’ts of the program. After that, we stretched and prepared for the mermaid swimming.

Soon enough, it was time for the magic potion…er, the costume.

PRINCESS MERMAID EXPERIENCE

First of all, I was surprised to see that the costume has two parts – the tail and the skin. I first tried the tail, as one of the Manila Ocean Park’s staff told me that it varies depending on a person’s feet size. Think of it as a shoe with flippers. Once settled, I got to choose the color of my mermaid skin. Since I brought my blue bikini and completed my makeup with blue eyeshadow, I went for a blue spandex suit.

bye, bye legs!

The skin was really thin, a comfortable surprise compared with the tail. It was imported from Germany and I could see the high quality of the spandex. Being a petite and cute lady, I had to fold the skin around my waist since it was too long for me.

Complete with all my mermaid accessories, I was ready to jump in the pool. Well, not your typical swimming area. The park made the mermaid swimming experience authentic by creating a man-made pool complete with rocks, algae, and sea creatures. Moreover, it was filled with sea water.

Nope, he wasn’t selling a mermaid flesh per kilo.

For those who know me or have read my revelations, you won’t be surprised that I don’t know how to swim. Sure, I can float around and walk in the water, but not that Olympian swimming style. Thus, it was almost a given that I found swimming with my legs together inside a suit more difficult. Still, the park’s guide were patient in teaching me how to properly swim.

The Princess Mermaid

It was a beautiful experience wearing a mermaid suit, but a different one when swimming with it. It was not an easy work; I think I burned enough calories! One must know the proper swimming technique to easily propel in the water without the use of hands. I initially did freestyle and the staff told me that no mermaid swims like that. Bummer. I ended up just floating and sitting near the rocks.

VERDICT

Mermaid Swim at Manila Ocean Park is a wonderful, exciting, and novel activity one must do at least once in a lifetime. The feeling of colourful fish scales and tail instead of legs is a dream come true for many, but swimming wearing a suit is something everyone must prepare to fully enjoy the experience. The park has already equipped itself with a pool filled with salty seawater, mossy rocks, and stray starfishes, and it only needs beautiful maidens and mermans to visit.
