“They say the truth can set you free. I found out it can kill you.”

Seventeen-year-old Kat Matheson has never revealed the dark secret that sets her apart from everyone else: She can see and hear the dead. Until now, she has been able to ignore the strange apparitions and whispering voices. But it may not be that simple anymore. Haunted by eerie visions and increasingly frightening nightmares, Kat begins to fear she may be the target of a dark and ominous force from beyond the grave. Complicating matters is the arrival of her new neighbor, a young man she instinctively distrusts but is inexplicably drawn to. Gorgeous and mysterious, he seems to hold a disturbing knowledge of her long-held secrets.

As she desperately tries to maintain control, events take an unexpected and violent turn. Discovering that nothing is what it seems and that her psychic abilities may involve far more than just communing with the dead, Kat may be forced to confront her worst fears and the powerful curse that controls her destiny.

First, let’s start with the cover. I like dark, creepy covers featuring a woman with a gown to die for. If readers judge a book by its cover (and some really do), then they can immediately know that this book has a paranormal story.

The storyline is simple and nothing much new. The heroine, Kat, can see and hear dead people. This may bore me, but good thing the author added something more to her destiny which not only make the book bearable, but also interesting.

The characters are typical – those you find in high school and perhaps can relate with. Kat is described as someone who struggled to be normal since she was a kid. Seeing and hearing ghosts are not something one can feel confident having with so she mostly keep to herself. She has a crush on Rick, her high school mate who happened to be more than that. Then later, an extremely gorgeous yet mysterious man, Lovell, moved in to the house next to where she’s living with her parents. Things became more suspicious when she felt that Lovell knows more about her and her secrets.

The narration is also okay. It is Kat’s POV and I like reading her thoughts throughout the story. Sometimes, I feel for her while in other times I just can’t understand her. She doesn’t seem perfect, and I like it. Other authors build their heroes and heroines like saints that I feel disgusted reading their stories.

As for the writing, I admit I felt sleepy in the beginning. The pace is slow, but fortunately in caught up somewhere in the middle of the book. Still, some parts are dry that I caught myself skipping some lines just to catch something important. There’s also romance included in the story, but I am a bit disappointed that it wasn’t built that strong. However, I like the love triangle and I find myself sympathizing Kat after the betrayal she felt when she learned about the truth and her destiny.

This book is recommendable for paranormal, young adult, and romance readers. Just a bit of a warning though – don’t expect much in the end! I hate cliffhangers and I hate it more when the second book is not yet available. It keeps me wondering what will happen next and then later on, I will find myself constructing my own book 2. Hehe. So Molly, if ever you’re reading this, please finish the second book so fans of Reckoning will be able to follow Kat’s story.
